I know, it’s always a dilemma. And I also know that even after I put down thousands of words discussing it, I still won’t get a certain answer. I am struggling with it all the time. Trust me, for me it’s not a silly question. It’s a myth.

Like this afternoon, I popped into Spotlight with a very clear mind that knew exactly what I was going to get. I checked out the rows and rows of shelves, then I lost. I guess the reason of that was all of a sudden, I realised that it was actually a bit of insane for a knitter to narrow down her search target on some particular yarn. I hated myself ignoring the rest of pretty stuff. Why must I have done that? There might have been some really good bargain for a keen knitter. However, as you look at only one direction, you miss things.

The funny thing was I didn’t see what I was looking forward to see. It was bad news for a knitter who had an idea that had been hovering in the mind for such a long time (let me say, for a whole day since this morning the training started). I was a bit disappointed. But look at the positive side, I saw lots of substitutions, and lots of possibilities, which reminded me soemthing that I have been wanting to knit for a while. But, I didn’t know how many balls of yarn I should get. I hated myself that I didn’t list all the material requirements for every piece of project that I was interested in the past. I hate myself keep missing the opportunities, and my stupid one-way thinking.

I often think of my mom, try to recall how she dealt with this sort of problem when I was very young. In my memory, she always bought yarn back home first, and then she started to knit something. Not like me, she is not a pattern follower. I guess she didn’t have to bring along with a detailed idea to the shop and decide how many balls of yarn she would need. She can estimate, while I can’t. I have a fear of buying insufficient yarn quantity or maybe going to the opposite side that I end up buying too much yarn that I won’t need, which certainly would worry me as it’s a big waste.

But, talking about “waste”. I think such word doesn’t exist in a professional knitting designer’s dictionary. They always buy yarn first and then find a pattern. They maybe have a big stash of different sort of yarn standing by and waiting to be picked up for the next project. I wish I could do that as it’s a nice thing to have a yarn library at home. But I also know it’s a luxury thing for me that I couldn’t afford. However thinking of cooking, it works the same way. Do you often have different sort of ingredients in your kitchen that you can make whatever you like to make at any time, or you have to run to supermarket to get the ingredient you need after you read a recipe from a book?
