Lily’s husband, Mr. Big Lawyer Wang (that’s the way how I call him) gave us a very informative speech about some basic legal issues which have confused us for many years. As a matter of fact, I do look at myself a totally illiterate person on law. The lucky thing is I have never ever involved in any legal trouble, so with my limited knowledge on law, I could get survived and still here. But I personally have a very strong feeling that I should develop my knowledge as an ordinary resident of this society, just to understand where I am standing and what would be the right response if there is an inevitable legal incident happens in the future.
Lucky that I’ve been to several court settings in Australia, which includes Local Court, District Court, Supreme Court and Hight Court, as my Interpreting course required me to do so at a time. Except the Federal Court, I heard and sighted a number of boring things in those kinds of court settings. There was once when I was hearing a homicide case in Supreme Court with my classmate Gretchen, I couldn’t help making fun of the Judge (secretly), who was wearing a very funny white and velvet red costume and has white and long beard. I asked Gretchen what she saw from this old man? She didn’t get me. Then I told her the only thing I can see was a Santa Clouse sitting there, but without riding his deer carriage, and his assistant sitting beside him holding a big rode with some engraving garnishment on the top. That guy, I supposed, was nearly falling asleep because he looked so bored with his duties of job (which was really not much at all), and I can see there was nothing in his tired eyes except endless emptiness. The case was interesting. A Cambodian guy was accused for murdering someone, but accompanied by all the boring procedure as a necessary part of court hearing, the whole thing seemed extremely long and heavy. Finally got to the break time, I heard a couple of juries talking outside and saying they don’t really understand what’s going on and what the judge said. Hehe….So did I, man!
Anyway, today’s knowledge covers: Free legal assistance in Australia, the difference of license granted by ACT and NSW lawyers’ association, some particular ethic issues for solicitors when the justice and personal interests got conflicted, how American legal system works and its relation with the movie Legally Blond, and the recent reformation of Melbourne University on the admission of law degree. That was truly helpful!!! and he is pretty good at that. Followed by that was an argument between me and my husband on how to deal with a hypothesised situation where our car got crashed with another car on the road and the driver from another car insisted it’s the fault of us, which we don’t really agree with. The argument went so badly that we both yelled at each other at the end, as if we were the drivers from the opposite sides. The lawyer couple had nothing to say but looked at us two crazy people with their shocked faces.
