The weather was terrible here in the past weekend. The heavy rain lasted a whole day on the Saturday and the wind was gone mad on the Sunday.
We were all stuck at home, not much fun when it’s no longer possible to be able to choose when to go to sleep in a rainy day, except I eventually finished these soft baby blocks.
Now Vivian has got total 8 cubes all together, 6 in a set of her name, and another two with dots and numbers.
I’d say that I was in love with this project at the first sight. It took me more time thinking of making them than actually making them.
I admit that most of time I get to spend time on my hobby in the name of Vivian. I make things for her. As a result, she might get benefits (or might not). Regardless what is the truth, I certainly get joys in the course of making them
But I still hope Vivian will like them. I don’t mind what she would use them for…… squeezing, throwing, chewing or biting, stacking? Or a bit of education like counting or learning her name? Or simply just some softies to engage her when I am changing her nappies.
Oh yes, nappy change has become such a battle now, as she wouldn’t stop moving every part of her body. However, in a perfect world, the idea would be, one day she wakes up quiet, then she finds these cubes,
then she grabs them and play with them, then she finds them comforting (Alas, I must be daydreaming, and I doubt it would ever happen in my parenthood of this life
Well, no hard feelings……
Talking about these blocks, It’s a perfect project for me. Good to use up fabric scraps and easy to cut and sew. I also finished all the polyfill stuffing after this project, which is great.
The most time consuming part is to attach the letters to the fabric. I am too cheap to buy web fusible stuff as well as find the perfect fonts, so I just hand drew them (that’s why they look a bit funny) and used blanket stitch to hand sew the dots and used machine straight stitch to sew letters and numbers. I used felt as the material to do this.
My version of the block is about 4″ . Trust me, it does require some technique to sew every three pieces perfectly joining on one point. I’d say I probably had only 50 percent of them achieved this goal.
Vivian probably won’t notice that, so I forgive myself this time:-)
If you want to make one yourself, here is one of the tutorials I used. They are perfect as a handmade gift for a young baby to a much older toddler.
My cubes are all standing by, to be picked up and play with my baby girl:-)
Have a lovely weekend!
