With very limited knowledge on crochet (I only know how to do chain stitch and single crochet), I can’t believe that I already have got my very first crochet project, a tapestry basket done.
I was very frustrated with learning how to do crochet at the beginning, even now I still think that maybe I actually didn’t get it right. All I did is to follow the instruction from those pictures. Even though drawing is much better than thousands of words, it’s still not enough for a beginner to make the sense.
However, I was so inspired by Carol Ventura’s Tapestry (beaded) Design and couldn’t helping trying it myself. I thought I could learn while working on a specific project. It’s always the best way to master the skills. Just that I found myself really not intelligent enough to figure out crochet myself. So I simplified the project from beaded to no beads at all, from two colours crochet down to one main yarn at the end.
I also totally ignored the size and the number of stitches that original pattern suggested. For the very first 15 rounds, it was really a pain for me, as I tried too hard to stick on the pattern. But after I realised that I actually couldn’t do it anyway, I completely released myself. I let the instruction go. I just do what I can do, increased the base for each round at four corners as I liked or whenever I felt necessary. So I don’t know how many rounds and stitches this basket ended up.
After I have done the base, it turned out the whole thing became a mindless work. The only thing I needed to make sure was to insert the hook in the right loop for the next stitch and not get the yarn split when I pulled it through.
Now it comes up like this, a small square basket. The texture is almost like felted item, very tight and perfect to hold some small items inside. It works well both sides. Personally I prefer inside out
I wonder if it would look better if I added some pom-poms at the top edges in 4 corners. Would that make the basket look too girly if I meant to give it to my husband?
