I had my MMR vaccine injection today. The nurse who gave me the injection warned me beforehand with all the possible reactions or side effects that might happen afterwards. So far I am feeling okay except a bit of hot. I am not sure if I get that from vaccine or just our new tropical office.
Anyway they say I might get a bit of fever after several days or even rashes on the body (not infectious), as it’s kind of using disabled virus to boost the immunity in human’s body. I am just hoping that I won’t look too odd next Monday.
MMR is the combined vaccine against measles, mumps and rubella. Rubella, as a disease is often mild and attacks often pass unnoticed. But infection of the mother by Rubella virus during pregnancy can be serious; if the mother is infected within the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, the child may be born with congenital rubella syndrome, which entails a range of serious incurable illnesses.
MMR has been being used in Australia for many years, but in mainland China, we don’t use MMR on children, that’s why I get very low immunity in my body according to my blood test result.
I wouldn’t even have noticed the need for MMR vaccine if my friend Jessie didn’t tell me a year ago. I guess I can take a chance not having MMR as mostly likely I won’t get caught with that, but if you want some peace in your mind, this is at least something that you can do to ACTIVELY prevent bad things happen on you.
Who knows? Karen, the nurse in the surgery, told me today there were still cases of Rubella found in Australian community nowadays. The very recent one was from World Cup Football Game and the athlete who brought the virus in was from India.
