We went to see the specialist this morning. Dr. Pidcock got called away so the appointment has been changed to see another Doctor, Dr. Latimer. Basically we all knew that today’s appointment would make no difference for the treatment. He still has to take Warfarin for at least 6 months to make sure he’s being covered and protected from new clots forming.
All the tests done so far were all good except Protein C Study which was much lower than normal level. But doctor said it can mean nothing as the test had been done AFTER my husband already had clots and began the warfarin treatment, which can all affect Protein C level. So we have to wait and have it tested again after 6 months warfarin to get clots all clear and broken down by body then off warfarin for a month or so.
So at this stage, the reason caused PE remained a mystery, and there is a possibility that it could remain a mystery forever. It’s not that there was no reason, it’s just that modern science and technology couldn’t identify the reason. I guess if that was the case, you still have to get on with your life and live with it accepting there is something happened beyond human being’s capacity and knowledge. But so what? GOD moves in a mysterious way, didn’t they say that?
However, his case is very rare as they can’t figure out where the clots were initially from. When we were sitting in the waiting room with other patients, it felt extremely strange. We were probably the youngest persons in the waiting room as most of patients looked at least above 50s. As we were Asian people, this made us look more different.
The doctor also mentioned another test run in July to exclude some other reasons before August appointment. And, she seemed keen on including my husband into a research trial group for some sort of different medication other than warfarin afterwards if they did find no reason for my husband’s PE. It’s said the benefits from that would be my husband getting close monitored (24 7?) for about 2-3 years time. (Well, they were looking for subjects as we do in our psychological laboratory experiment.)
By the time we finished the appointment, we were told not to worry about the payment and it’s all been covered by Medicare., though we had expected to pay. This felt really weird–you are in a hospital but do not need to run around to different places to pay anything? Had this ever happened before? Normally we felt being rip off after going to hospitals in China. Even if you go to treat a minor cold or flu, you won’t be able to out off there without paying at least 200 bucks. Sometimes this made us have to think, if this PE means to happen, we at least have come to the right place.
