My recent crafty tempt is to make some wooden popsicle bookmarks. I don’t know if anyone nowadays still thinks that making a bookmark is worth their precious time, as people rarely read from a real book now, and it is just so easy to find something to slip between pages.

It’s no doubt that bookmarks are going to extinct before paper-based books extinct. However, I love having several borrowed books in hands all the time, and I consider these little accessories as a personal touch in additional to my reading life , a life that I never took seriously but is very enjoyable.

I believe that as long as you READ, sooner or later, you would ask for a bookmark. That’s what have prompted me to create these things recently. Those books on our side table near the lounge deserve a little special treat, something not our grandmothers offered in the past century.

All I have used was plain wooden pop sticks, a 4mm fine tip marker and a set of letter rubber stamps (my new favourite “ingredient”). I stamped two words quotes or make up something I like, I drew a simple symbol or picture, put all of them in a glass jar (used a baby food jar). And that was it. If you prefer a prettier jar, just do something with your jar. I actually used black rub-on decals. They came out all great and cute. Or if you want something fancier, you can stick something on one end of bookmark, like a glass pebble or a 3d sticker. Leave them on your coffee table next to your books, they are simply handy and special.

I reckon I can sell them to raise the money for charity. How much should I charge?

According to Vivian’s language, we “went out to play” today. We tried to go to Googong South Foreshore, but didn’t really worry about our destination.

As we headed towards to countryside, the beautiful country view unfolded in front of our eyes. Valleys with autumn colours, mountains in distance with layers, endless grass land, little or big ponds, sculpture-liked bald trees, assorted native plants and flowers, beautiful country stone houses, windmills, farm equipments, and of course a lot of farm animals, from horses, cattle, to sheep, dogs, even alpacas (one of my favorite little animals).

Vivian always say “hello” to them, then would say “bye bye” when we had to leave, which was so funny. She even requested to have a ride on horse today which really amazed me as it was completely out of blue, and I don’t remember we have ever given her any idea about cowgirl or “horses are ridden-able”

We are sort of in debate ourselves to accept the fact that she is actually very close to be a country girl. Given that it only takes 5 minutes drive for her to see cows and sheep, she certainly is not lack of experience on country life at all.

Shall we have to get a horse for her?

We have been trying to get out to do something every weekend. This morning we decided to head to the south tip of Canberra to see what’s about over there. As there was really not any specific plan, we ended up in Namadgi National Park and then went to Lanyon Homestead in Tharwa.

Even though it is not an easy job to take a two years old for hiking, we were so inspired by the photos displayed in the Visitor Centre and the beautiful surrounding environment that the mountains and beautiful wild trees offer, that we decided to do a bit bush walking.

We managed to finish an hour’s bush walking along the woodland track…. short and sweet. The whole walking was very slow paced and we stopped occasionally to catch the breath, have some snacks and shoot some photos. However, we really had a good time and that was what the whole point was about, to get out to the mother nature, to see, to breath the fresh air, and to feel.

I suppose that it was a bit stupid that we carried so much stuff, including a tripod, a cooler bag, my normal big tote bag, David’s camera gear bag and of course Vivian, who walked about half way and always tried to run off the track to go into the grassy area touching this and that, as she has no idea about potential hazard and sees no difference from this to our backyard, which was not helpful anyway.

Then we went to Lanyon Homestead at noon time, Vivian had a ball over there. She ran on the steep lawn in the garden up and down, tried to invade into private farming property over the other side of the fence, to drive behind the wheel of an old tractor….she screamed, jumped, laughed (except ate) until the sky got black and the rain fell. We took the shelter in the marquee until we finished the lunch over there.

Vivian fell asleep on the car on the way back. It didn’t take long for her to do so, only about 5 minutes’ rolling her eyes and losing her body control before she completely dozed off to her dreamland. On the other side of the road near a pond, a herd of black cows stared at us with their interesting white faces, which looked incredibly real that we had to stop to take more photos for them.

We were glad that we did this today as it was so lovely. Already started to talk about coming back with ourselves more prepared.
