According to mom, those T-shirt looked baby suits are not so appropriate for newborns. She seems not really fond of any ideas of using zips, snap fasteners, buttons or designs that have to go through baby’s head from the top. Anyway, what mom suggested was something that she called “Monk Wrap” (和尚服).

I couldn’t really picture what exactly she was referring to as you know, phone conversations are often difficult for a precise description. However, I figured out myself that what she said was probably something like a Japanese styled top (和服), which doesn’t require any extra effort to go through delicate baby’s head.

Recently Updated So, here we go, a perfect baby kimono pattern from Habitual. Again this time, I used some recycled cotton fabric from an old summer vest (mom made that for me many years ago but I just had never worn it before). Well, I did buy some new fabric recently from Spotlight, but I just want to try out the idea first so not to ruin a good piece of cloth :-)

The thing I am proud of the most is I made those chocolate brown coloured bias tape myself, by using some strips cut in a 45 degree angel from an old shirt, with assistance of a bias tape maker. I thought I made a perfect width for the tape, but turned out still a bit too narrow, which made the stitch sewing a bit difficult to control under a sewing machine. All the shops actually have different colours of bias tapes for sell and they are not expensive at all. I guess trying it yourself is worthwhile, but if you want to save time and all the trouble making tapes yourself, buying those ready-made from shops is actually a very good idea.

The tutorial was great and I had a lot of fun making it. Baby cloth and stuff are just so cute. It’s like you have a lighter and miniature version’s meal but with all the flavours that you want to have in one deal. I definitely will make another one (though I do know mom had already bought a couple of them in Beijing) to improve some mistakes that I made in this wrap.
